The Maine Track Challenge

“Think you know the Maine woods, bub? Identify the tracks and see if you’re a True Mainah or just passin’ through.”

Think you know the Maine woods, bub?

Most folks think a track is just a hole in the mud. But a True Mainah sees a story. From the ghost-like stride of a Lynx to the heavy-handed print of a Bull Moose, every track tells you who’s been movin’ while you were sleepin’.

🚩 Identify 5 tracks to earn your rank. Don’t fumble, the woods aren’t forgiving.

🌲 GAIT ANALYSIS

A track is more than a footprint. It’s a rhythm. Direct registeringβ€”where the rear foot lands exactly where the front foot wasβ€”is the sign of a wild animal moving with zero wasted energy.

🐾 MUD TEARS

Look at the ‘wall’ of the track. If the mud is pushed up and forward (the throw), the animal was in a hurry. A slow walk leaves a clean entry and exit. The mud doesn’t lie, bub.

🚩 THE DOG DECEPTION

Don’t let a big paw fool you. Domestic dogs have splayed toes and messy claws. A coyote or wolf track is tight, oval, and purposeful. If it looks like a diamond, it’s wild.
