The Maine Track Challenge
“Think you know the Maine woods, bub? Identify the tracks and see if you’re a True Mainah or just passin’ through.”
Think you know the Maine woods, bub?
Most folks think a track is just a hole in the mud. But a True Mainah sees a story. From the ghost-like stride of a Lynx to the heavy-handed print of a Bull Moose, every track tells you who’s been movin’ while you were sleepin’.

π² GAIT ANALYSIS
A track is more than a footprint. It’s a rhythm. Direct registeringβwhere the rear foot lands exactly where the front foot wasβis the sign of a wild animal moving with zero wasted energy.
πΎ MUD TEARS
Look at the ‘wall’ of the track. If the mud is pushed up and forward (the throw), the animal was in a hurry. A slow walk leaves a clean entry and exit. The mud doesn’t lie, bub.
π© THE DOG DECEPTION
Don’t let a big paw fool you. Domestic dogs have splayed toes and messy claws. A coyote or wolf track is tight, oval, and purposeful. If it looks like a diamond, it’s wild.
